What is NNAT Test (Naglieri Nonverbal Ability)?

The Naglieri Nonverbal Ability Test, or NNAT, is a popular cognitive ability test that is used to measure the intelligence of children from preschool to grade 12. It was developed by Jack Naglieri, Ph.D., a renowned expert in the field of psychology and education.

The NNAT is unique in that it is a nonverbal test, which means that it does not rely on language skills. Instead, it measures a child’s ability to reason and problem-solve using visual and spatial cues. This makes the test particularly useful for assessing children whose first language may not be English, or who may have speech or language difficulties.

The NNAT is administered individually or in small groups, and typically takes between 30-45 minutes to complete. It consists of 48 multiple-choice questions, each of which presents the child with a visual pattern or sequence. The child must then select the missing piece or next item in the sequence from a set of possible answers.

The questions on the NNAT are designed to be engaging and challenging, and they become progressively more difficult as the test goes on. The test is scored based on the number of correct answers, and the score is then used to place the child on a percentile rank, which compares their performance to that of other children their age.

The NNAT has a number of potential uses, including: Identifying gifted and talented students who may benefit from advanced academic programs or accelerated learning opportunities. Identifying children who may need additional support or intervention, such as those who may have learning difficulties or developmental delays. Providing data that can be used to inform educational planning and decision-making, such as selecting appropriate instructional materials or determining appropriate classroom placement.

It’s important to note that the NNAT is just one tool that can be used to assess a child’s abilities, and it should never be used as the sole determinant of a child’s intelligence or potential.

In addition, it’s important to ensure that the test is administered and interpreted by a trained professional who can provide accurate and meaningful results.
