What is NNAT?
The NNAT is a nonverbal assessment designed to measure students’ reasoning and problem-solving abilities using shapes, patterns, and visual relationships rather than language or math skills.
Pattern Completion
Students identify the missing piece that completes a visual design.
Reasoning by Analogy
Students determine how shapes or patterns relate to each other and apply the same relationship to find the answer.
Serial Reasoning
Students recognize rules or sequences in a series of shapes and predict what comes next.
Spatial Visualization
Students mentally manipulate shapes, such as turning, flipping, or combining them, to find the correct match.
The Naglieri Nonverbal Ability Test (NNAT®), first introduced in 1997 and now available in updated editions, is a widely used group-administered assessment in the U.S. to help schools identify students for gifted and talented programs, often focusing on those performing at the top percentiles. Unlike achievement tests that measure mastery of grade-level content, the NNAT is entirely nonverbal and uses abstract shapes and patterns to evaluate reasoning ability. This design minimizes the impact of language and cultural background, making it especially useful for assessing students from diverse populations. By measuring how children recognize patterns, solve visual problems, and think logically, the NNAT gives schools a clearer picture of each student’s learning potential.

Frequently asked questions
The Naglieri Nonverbal Ability Test (NNAT) is a standardized assessment that measures a child’s nonverbal reasoning and problem-solving skills. Unlike tests that rely heavily on language or math knowledge, the NNAT uses shapes, patterns, and visual puzzles to evaluate how children recognize relationships and think logically.
Because the NNAT is language-free and culturally neutral, it is especially useful for assessing students from diverse backgrounds, including English language learners. Schools commonly use the NNAT to help identify students for gifted and talented programs in grades K–12, with most testing focused on elementary school levels.
The test provides educators and parents with insight into a child’s spatial reasoning and abstract thinking, making it a valuable tool for recognizing academic potential that may not show up in traditional classroom tests.
PrepForest’s NNAT practice tests include a variety of nonverbal reasoning questions designed to mirror the actual exam. The main question types are:
Pattern completion – Identify the missing piece in a visual pattern.
Reasoning by analogy – Determine relationships between shapes or designs.
Serial reasoning – Recognize sequences and predict the next figure.
Spatial visualization – Understand how shapes and figures fit together or change orientation.
Each practice set is carefully curated for grades K–5, with multiple quizzes of 20–30 questions each, ensuring students consistently practice all types of nonverbal reasoning.
The full packages typically include hundreds unique questions per grade, giving children plenty of opportunities to build confidence and improve problem-solving skills.
PrepForest’s NNAT practice packages include between 400 and 600 unique questions, depending on the grade level. Each package is divided into multiple quizzes, typically containing 20–30 questions per quiz, covering all major nonverbal reasoning skills: pattern completion, analogies, serial reasoning, and spatial visualization.
This structure allows students to practice in manageable sessions while gaining exposure to a wide variety of question types, helping them build confidence and strengthen problem-solving skills for the actual NNAT test.
Yes. PrepForest offers 1-month, 3-month, and 6-month access options for NNAT practice packages. Once a student purchases a package, they can use the materials for the duration they selected, starting from the date of purchase.
After the access period ends, students will no longer be able to view the content or previously attempted quizzes, so it’s important to complete the practice within the chosen timeframe.
No, PrepForest NNAT practice quizzes are untimed. Our goal is to provide a stress-free learning environment where children can focus on developing their reasoning and problem-solving skills without feeling rushed.
However, we do capture the time each student takes to complete a quiz, so parents can review timing if they want to monitor progress or practice completing tests within a certain timeframe. Parents can also set their own time limits at home if they wish.
PrepForest’s NNAT practice tests are designed specifically for the NNAT3 (Third Edition of the Naglieri Nonverbal Ability Test). While the NNAT2 and NNAT3 share similar question types—such as pattern completion, analogies, serial reasoning, and spatial visualization—the NNAT3 includes updated content and enhanced digital features.
In general, the practice questions can still be useful for NNAT2, but our materials are optimized for the NNAT3 format to provide the most accurate and effective preparation for students.
Yes! While the NNAT measures nonverbal reasoning and problem-solving skills rather than memorized knowledge, there are several strategies parents can use to help their child improve:
Regular practice – Use PrepForest’s NNAT quizzes consistently, ideally 2–3 times per week in short 20–30 minute sessions, to build familiarity with question types.
Focus on patterns and relationships – Encourage your child to recognize shapes, sequences, and analogies in everyday life through puzzles, games, and visual activities.
Practice spatial visualization – Activities like tangrams, block building, or pattern-based games can strengthen spatial reasoning.
Encourage thinking aloud – Have your child explain their reasoning as they solve a problem to reinforce logical thinking.
Reduce stress and build confidence – Let children take untimed practice tests (like PrepForest quizzes) to focus on skill development rather than speed.
By combining structured practice with fun, everyday reasoning exercises, children can improve their NNAT skills, boost confidence, and perform their best on test day.
Currently, PrepForest does not offer printable NNAT worksheets. All practice materials are digital and interactive, designed for online use.
However, we are actively working on printable versions and plan to release them in the near future, so parents will soon have the option to download and print worksheets for offline practice.
